- Tuesday, May 20, 6:30-9:30 p.m.: Reception and Dinner ($55 early / $65 standard)—guest lecturer Jay Wortman will present “A Modern Traditional Canadian First Nations Diet.” Jay has spent his career (former director of Inuit and First Nations Health) working with and studying diets and diseases of Canada's First Nations Peoples. His experiences lead him to reintroduce a First Nations diet rich in marine foods, high in protein and fat and low in carbohydrate to succesfully treat type 2 diabetes and obesity among coastal bands. His studies and pursuits have attracted the attention of the Canadian Health Minister and Oprah who recently visited one of his sites and are the topic on a hour long documentary airing on the Canadian Broadcasting Service this spring.
On Monday, May 19th the division will feature the Mark Bieber memorial session on obesity. Dr. Jay Wortman will present on carbohydrate restriction (reintroduction of traditional First Nations Diet) to treat obesity and diabetes in a large population in coastal Canada. Dr. Wortman is the former director of First Nations and Inuit health and has amazing experiences to share. Dr. Jeff Volek will also be presenting.

Since 1959 the North Central Section of the AOCS has used the Alton E. Bailey Award to recognize outstanding research and exceptional service in the field of lipids and associated products. The award commemorates Alton E. Bailey's great contributions to the field of fats and oils as a researcher, as an author of several standard books in the field, and as a leader in the work of the society. The 2008 award will be presented to Dr. Kiyotaka Sato from Hiroshima University, Japan. The award will be presented to Dr. Sato on Tuesday, May 20th during the Edible Applications Technology Division Dinner. Dr. Sato's award address is titled "Molecular aspects of structure-property-function relationships of fats."
New Board Members, by Brent Flickinger
Our Division board consists of a chairperson, a vice chairperson, secretary and treasurer. These are elected for two-year terms, and the terms of the current board members end this spring. New elections will therefore be held in the coming months.
It has been our tradition that the vice chairperson be the nominee-designate for the chairperson position, the secretary be the nominee-designate for the vice-chairperson and the treasurer be the nominee-designate for the secretary position if s/he is willing to run for these offices. All Division members are welcomed and encouraged to nominate additional individuals for these board positions—especially for the treasurer position.
The proposed slate of candidates would be:
Chairperson: Pete Huth, consultant
Vice chairperson: Eileen Bailey, Martek; Matt Pikosky, Dairy Council
Secretary: Carol Lammi-Keefe, Louisiana State University
Treasurer: open
Please send your nominations to me at flickinger@admworld.com by March 7. In mid-March Division members will receive information from the AOCS on voting for the 2008-2010 Health & Nutrition Division Board.
AOCS Offers Expanded Career Center
The AOCS career center delivers opportunities for advancement at any stage in your professional development.
AOCS and JobTarget have partnered to create a new full-service online career center. The career center focuses on assisting job seekers in the fats and oils industry and can be found on the AOCS website at http://www.aocs.org/member/jobcent.
AOCS knows how hard it is for employers to find top quality professionals, and for job seekers to find the right employer. Our career center connects member and non-member professionals in their search to find the optimal career fit.
The career center includes a Job Alert system that notifies you by email of new job opportunities that match your search criteria and an Anonymous Résumé Bank feature that enables you to list your experience and qualifications in a protected environment. The anonymous posting option allows you to stay connected to the employment market while maintaining full control of your confidential information. In return, employers have the option to pay only for the résumés that are appropriate for their job opportunity with the Pay-Per-Résumé feature.
For all your career needs and resources, visit us at http://www.aocs.org/member/jobcent.
