AOCS ANNUAL MEETING SPECIAL
AOCS 2008 Annual Meeting in Seattle May 18-21, Discounted Registration Available Through February 29
AOCS is planning an excellent 99th Annual Meeting and Expo, offering participants a full technical program and many networking events.
The current draft of the technical program is online. Updates and other conference information can be found at the official Annual Meeting webpage, including Hot Topic Symposia, short courses, and a complete schedule. Check back; the website will be continuously updated as new information becomes available.
Here are some key division events to take note of:
- Sunday, May 18, 1:00-2:30 p.m.: Board Meeting, Poster Presentations

(Time to be determined): Roundtable Discussion
- Tuesday, May 20, 6:30-9:30 p.m.: Reception and Dinner ($55 early / $65 standard)—guest lecturer Jay Wortman will present “A Modern Traditional Canadian First Nations Diet.” Jay has spent his career (former director of Inuit and First Nations Health) working with and studying diets and diseases of Canada's First Nations Peoples. His experiences lead him to reintroduce a First Nations diet rich in marine foods, high in protein and fat and low in carbohydrate to succesfully treat type 2 diabetes and obesity among coastal bands. His studies and pursuits have attracted the attention of the Canadian Health Minister and Oprah who recently visited one of his sites and are the topic on a hour long documentary airing on the Canadian Broadcasting Service this spring.
On Monday, May 19th the division will feature the Mark Bieber memorial session on obesity. Dr. Jay Wortman will present on carbohydrate restriction (reintroduction of traditional First Nations Diet) to treat obesity and diabetes in a large population in coastal Canada. Dr. Wortman is the former director of First Nations and Inuit health and has amazing experiences to share. Dr. Jeff Volek will also be presenting.
Tuesday May 20th will include a session on tocotrienols

Alton Bailey Award Winner
Since 1959 the North Central Section of the AOCS has used the Alton E. Bailey Award to recognize outstanding research and exceptional service in the field of lipids and associated products. The award commemorates Alton E. Bailey's great contributions to the field of fats and oils as a researcher, as an author of several standard books in the field, and as a leader in the work of the society. The 2008 award will be presented to Dr. Kiyotaka Sato from Hiroshima University, Japan. The award will be presented to Dr. Sato on Tuesday, May 20th during the Edible Applications Technology Division Dinner. Dr. Sato's award address is titled "Molecular aspects of structure-property-function relationships of fats."
